MANDALONG FOREST SHE-OAK PROJECTAL
Mandalong. Where the Forest She-oaks grow.
MANDALONG FOREST
SHE-OAK PROJECT
PLANTING FOOD TREES
This project aims to ensure the future survival of our local Glossy Black Cockatoos.
Mandalong lies within the traditional lands of the Awabakal people and its name describes this country as “where the Forest-oaks grow”
The forest oak is commonly known as the She-oak and most Mandalong residents have them growing on their properties.
She-oaks provide the main food source for both the Yellow Tailed Cockatoo and the Glossy Black Red Tailed Cockatoo which was listed as vulnerable under National Environmental Law in Aug 2022. Their falling numbers are being attributed to destruction of their food trees.
Given the extent of the recent tree felling in our area it has become even more imperative to future-proof the local cockatoos’ food supply.
The Project involves Mandalong residents in a significant conservation project by joining together in the planting of She-oaks on their properties.
Since the project’s beginning in 2024 there has been considerable interest and enthusiasm for the Mandalong Forest She-oaks Project. From gathering seed from local trees and raising our own tube stock, to the trial planting and then to the communal plantings, nearly 300 trees have been planted. Currently we are planning for another 200 to be planted in autumn 2027.
How the Project is supported
The Project is a member of the Glossy Black Conservancy and receives both technical advice and valuable information from this unique organisation.
The Local Landcare group provide us with essential planting guidance pertinent to the Mandalong area.
Centennial Coal has kindly contributed with funding.
We are very grateful for the support and encouragement we receive from these three organisations.
